Rockies activate Jose Reyes, immediately designate him for assignment

Baseball null The Rockies on Wednesday activated shortstop Jose Reyes and immediately designated him for assignment, noting simply in the announcement that "The Rockies currently have a full 40-man roster." Shortstop Jose Reyes has been designated for assignment.— Colorado Rockies (@Rockies) June 15, 2016MORE: Where do the Rockies rank among front offices? In essentially releasing the highest-paid player on their team, Colorado will be stuck eating the mo

ney remaining on Reyes' contract, in the neighborhood of $40 million when a $4 million buyout for 2018 is included.According to multiple reports, the Rockies shopped Reyes, 33, basically trying to get another team to pick up even a small portion of his contract. Instead, 15 days after the end of his  suspension for an offseason domestic violence incident, the team decided it would rather swallow the monster contract. The move was made easier by a breakout season by rookie shortstop Trevor Story (.265/.318 .553 with 17 homers and 45 RBIs).Reyes, who came to the Rockies from the Blue Jays at the trade deadline last year in the Troy Tulowitzki deal, had little impact in Colorado, finishing last season with a .259/.291/.368 slash line for a 94-loss team. The domestic violence case against Reyes, stemming from a hotel incident in Maui, was dropped when prosecutors said his wife refused to cooperate.Though the Rockies are 31-33 and eight games out in the NL West, they have played better in recent weeks, perhaps causing concern in the front office about what adding Reyes to a young clubhouse would do to team chemistry.
